As part of our continuing support programme for schools we are offering a focused support visit for maths co-ordinators.
Whilst the specific content of the discussion during the visit will vary from school to school, issues could include:
- the school's approach to systematic problem solving in mathematics and the use being made of current DfES recommended guidance materials (parts 2 and 3 are currently available in draft form). This is a particularly important area for development, not least because of the marked increase in 'using and applying' questions in SATs;
- possible use of LA produced 'fine-grading' assessment grids;
- effective data analysis including Fisher Family Trust material;
- curricular target setting based upon qualitative analysis of question level data.
A letter giving a possible time and date for the proposed visit is being sent to the headteacher of every primary, junior and infant school.
This document is designed to be used as a tool by mathematics co-ordinators in order to help them to effectively fulfil their leadership role of the subject. It will support colleagues to give a clear view of standards in the subject and areas for school development.
It has been produced by Gateshead's Primary Numeracy Team, mainly in response to the question frequently asked by co-ordinators, 'What should be in my co-ordinator's file?'

Within Standards Fund allocation for 2004/2005, funding was devolved to enable every mathematics co-ordinator to attend a half-day of training.
The focus of the session will be upon three main areas:
1) Assessment for Learning
Current and future support in relation to mathematics.
2) Mathematics and ICT
An update will be given regarding new material which has been produced to support the use of ICT in the maths lesson. New arrangements for accessing this and future support materials will be outlined.
3) Problem Solving in Mathematics
Outline of the current position in Gateshead and a possible way forward.
FOR ALLOCATED DATES PLEASE REFER TO LETTER DATED 25 APRIL 2005. It is essential that reply slips are completed and returned to ensure appropriate catering and accommodation arrangements.
